Canyonlands - a colorful landscape of canyons, mesas and buttes carved into the Colorado Plateau by the Colorado and Green Rivers and their tributaries. The park covers 527.5 mi² (1,366 km²).

Canyonlands National Park, is located near Arches National Park and Moab, Utah. The park was designated as a National Park on September 12, 1964.

Canyons carved into the Colorado Plateau by the Colorado River and Green River partition the area into three major districts:

  • Island in the Sky at the north end
  • The Needles in the south-east
  • The Maze which is to the west
  • Horseshoe Canyon way to the north

There are two paved roads to the entrance of Canyonlands: Highway 313 leads to the Island in the Sky and Highway 211 which leads to the Needles. Roads to the Maze are a mixture of graded dirt and 4WD and may become impassable when wet.

Canyonlands is extremely dry. Most precipitation falls in early spring and late summer. Summer highs often exceed 100 Degrees Fahrenheit, with winter temperatures possibly falling well below freezing.

Canyonlands has over 350,000 visitors annually
