Glen Canyon, in southeastern and south central Utah and northwestern Arizona within the Vermilion Cliffs area, was carved by two rivers, the Colorado River and the San Juan River.
Lake Powell which is a reservoir, was created by the Glen Canyon Dam whose construction began in 1956 and was able to begin blocking the flow of the river by 1963.
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area with over 1.2 million acres, offers unparalleled opportunities for water-based & backcountry recreation. The recreation area extends for hundreds of miles from Lees Ferry in Arizona to the Orange Cliffs of southern Utah, combining scenic vistas, geologic wonders, and a vast panorama of human history.
Boaters must have Zebra Mussels certification and are required to comply with Glen Canyon National Recreation Area’s zebra mussel prevention program before launching a boat into Lake Powell.
Summers are extremely hot, with little, if any, shade. Winters are moderately cold with night time lows often below freezing.
