The Grand Canyon - created by the Colorado River over a period of 6 million years, is 277 miles (446 km) long, with widths ranging from 4 to 18 miles (6.4 to 29 km) and depths to more than a mile (1.6 km).
The Grand Canyon known for its overwhelming size and its intricate and colorful landscape is an outdoor enthusiasts dream, offering hiking, boating, sightseeing and photography.
The North Rim of the park is located on the "Utah" side of the Canyon and only open from May through October. It is 44 miles south of Jacob Lake on Highway 67 to the canyon rim which can only be reached by road.
The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is open all year and is located on the "Arizona" side of the Canyon. The South Rim is 80 miles northwest of Flagstaff, Arizona via Hwy 180.
The North Rim temperatures are generally lower than the South Rim because of the greater elevation (averaging 8,000 ft / 2,438 m above sea level). Heavy rains are common on both rims during the summer months.
