Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains and part of the Blue Ridge Mountains which are a division of the larger Appalachian Mountain chain.

The 814 square miles (2,108 km²) encompassing this area became a National Park June 15, 1934 and was officially dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1940 .
The highest point is Clingmans Dome and elvations in the park range from 875 to 6,643 feet (250 to 2,000 m) above sea level.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park has mild winters and hot, humid summers.Temperatures can vary 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit from mountain base to top.
